Q&A with Vedran About His ESC Experience in Lisbon
- What motivated you to join the European Solidarity Corps (ESC)?
I felt like I needed a change in my life. Living in Berlin was amazing, but I wanted to start a new chapter and challenge myself. Volunteering through ESC seemed like the perfect opportunity to do something meaningful and different. It wasn’t just about the work, it was about immersing myself in a new culture, meeting people from different backgrounds, and discovering more about myself. The idea of contributing to a community while gaining new skills really excited me.
- How did you feel when you first arrived in Lisbon?
It was magical, unreal, and, to be honest, a bit scary. I was stepping out of my comfort zone, but the beauty of Lisbon and the kindness of the people quickly made me feel at home. The city itself felt like a dream, its vibrant streets, the warmth of the locals, and the endless sunshine were so welcoming. Those first days were filled with awe, exploration, and just a bit of homesickness, but I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.
- What was it like working at Spin?
From day one, I loved the atmosphere at Spin. Everyone’s energy was so genuine. I had the chance to manage social media, lead workshops, and work on incredible projects like Live it Lisbon and Tempo dos Direitos. It really pushed my creativity and skills to new levels. Spin felt like a family, and I always looked forward to collaborating with such passionate and talented people. It was a space where I could grow, express myself, and make a real impact.
- Can you tell us about a memorable project you worked on?
Live it Lisbon stands out. I led workshops, helped design programs, and even created theatrical introductions. It was a mix of leadership, creativity, and teamwork, and it taught me so much about myself. Seeing participants engage with the activities we created was incredibly rewarding. It felt like all the effort we put into planning had paid off, and those moments of connection and inspiration will stay with me forever.
- How did this experience shape your personal growth?
It boosted my confidence, especially in public speaking and leadership. I learned to trust my ideas and collaborate with others to make them a reality. I also became more adaptable and better at problem-solving. These experiences taught me to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and to appreciate the value of stepping outside my comfort zone. I feel like I’m leaving this experience as a more capable, resilient, and self-assured person.
- What’s your favorite memory from your time in Lisbon?
Watching sunsets at Miradouro da Graça with a book and a cappuccino. There’s something magical about how the sky transforms after sunset in Lisbon. It’s a moment of peace I’ll always cherish. Those quiet moments gave me time to reflect and appreciate everything I was experiencing. They made me feel connected to the city and its beauty in a deeply personal way.
- Did Lisbon remind you of home in any way?
Absolutely. It reminded me of Mostar. The laid-back vibe, friendly people, and coastal scenery gave me a sense of emotional connection that made it even harder to imagine leaving. Lisbon has this unique blend of familiarity and novelty, it feels like a home you’ve only just discovered but have always been searching for. That connection made my time there even more meaningful.
- What were the biggest challenges you faced during your ESC experience?
At first, being away from family, friends, and my dogs was tough. But over time, I realized that stepping out of my comfort zone was exactly what I needed to grow and embrace new experiences. It wasn’t easy, but it taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability. Every challenge I faced became a stepping stone to becoming a better version of myself.
- Do you have any advice for others considering ESC?
Go for it! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Be open to new opportunities, trust yourself, and make the most of every moment. You’ll gain skills, friends, and memories that will stay with you forever. It’s not just about volunteering, it’s about self-discovery, growth, and creating a story you’ll look back on with pride.
- What’s next for you after this experience?
I’ve decided to stay in Lisbon for at least another year. This city has become my home, and I’m excited to see what 2025 holds, hopefully more sunsets, creative projects, and even better memories. The experiences I’ve had here have shaped me in ways I never expected, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.
