Educational Program “Digitalization in Youth Work”, Session 1: “Understanding Digitalization” – Webinar 1

The first webinar in the “Digitalization in Youth Work” series, titled “Understanding Digitalization,” introduced youth workers to the concept of digitalization and its relevance in their professional and personal lives. This session provided a foundation for exploring the role of technology in transforming communication, education, and societal interactions. Delivered in an interview style, this webinar ensured a conversational and accessible format, making it easier for newcomers to understand and engage.

Key activities

  1. Exploring the Basics of Digitalization

The session began by unpacking the term “digitalization” and how it has evolved over time. Through the Digital Transformation Timeline activity, participants visually traced key milestones, such as the invention of the internet, the rise of smartphones, and the digitalization of governance. This activity helped participants understand how digital technologies have rapidly transformed industries and everyday life.

  1. World Café Discussions on Real-World Topics

Participants engaged in small group discussions on pressing issues like privacy, the digital divide, and the economic implications of digital transformation. These discussions highlighted both the opportunities and challenges of digitalization, encouraging youth workers to consider its impact on their communities.

  1. Debating Digital Ethics

A structured debate allowed participants to critically examine ethical questions like, “Should governments have access to personal data for national security?” This activity encouraged critical thinking and highlighted the complexity of balancing technological advancement with privacy concerns.

Virtual Implementation Tips

Recognizing the importance of accessibility, we shared best practices for delivering these activities online. Tools like Zoom facilitated breakout rooms for discussions, Mural enabled participants to brainstorm visually, and Mentimeter allowed real-time polls to keep the session interactive.

This webinar was designed to set the stage for future sessions, offering youth workers a foundational understanding of digitalization and its implications for youth work. By the end of the webinar, participants were better equipped to navigate the complexities of the digital era and begin integrating these insights into their work.

These webinars are part of the “Digitalization in Youth Work” program, designed to empower youth workers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to embrace digital transformation. Watch all the recordings and access resources at virtualinclusivecenter.eu/webinars.
